American luxury cars (like their somewhat related muscle cars) all had high compression. In the US, the name of the game was bigger and more powerful until 1971 or so, because of emissions regulation and reduced availability of high octane fuel.
The caddy had a very tall gearbox (it is a three speed auto after all). But it had gobs of torque. So? It weighed close to 5000 pounds. Of course the pony is going to win! Closer gears, faster revving engine, lighter car. No comparison. I quite frankly don't understand the comparison, these cars are not built for the same market

Did the article say they used the best gear? I think the current C&D test uses top gear for some of these "passing" type acceleration runs. That's why the modern Corvette often dose rather poorly and automatics often do well. The autos are allowed to down shift, the manuals are not. Top gear in a Corvette is very long and at such low speeds is almost idling the motor thus less than impressive numbers out of a car that even in it's paltry base form has 430 ponies (which translates into some random number of killingwhats )
Top gear is so tall in a corvette for fuel efficiency. The gearing through out is rather tall anyways. But corvettes produce enough torque that it is still competitive in acceleration. GM now offers a closer ratio gearbox for the first time in all Corvette models. That'll definitely make things interesting.

6.1 seconds 0-60 and a 14.5 sec 1/4 mile? That's been done before... 40 years ago! A '68 Dodge Dart GTS 340 with 3.55 axle ratio and 3-speed automatic ran 6.0 seconds 0-60 mph and 14.5 1/4 mile and it cost only around $3,500!
BTW, I question the "comfort" of a Toyota Camry. My Sister-in-law has a 2007 and it has those terrible hard seats.
Also, my Caddys have little or no rust.

We could maybe make new thread for how 'Merican cars rust more than an Alfasud left in the wild for 30 years.
Which is a well known fact.
Probably.
