    Global Car Ownership per 1,000

    Here are the figures.

Luxembourg, Iceland, New Zealand, Italy, Canada are top 5, Germany ranks 6th, Australia 8th, France 12th, America 16th, Britain 19th, Japan 21st.

Interesting to say the least - I saw a map on Wikipedia that had vehicles total by capita and the US ranks first in that one.

seriously, I would habe thought Japan, US and Germany to be in higher position or at least with an higher figure.

I think part of the reason that America is not higher is because our population is not as old as some of the other countries on the list. Europe is a lot closer to zero population growth, so more old people, more people with licences, more drivers, and more cars. As much as America thinks it has got it bad with the Baby Boomers it seems Europe faces a much bigger problem.
Though, by my logic, Japan should be much higher up on the list.

The Wiki one includes bikes and other vehicles (maybe commercial trucks) I think, The Economist one only "cars".

Ahhh, and in the US for years the majority of vehicles sold were pickups, so those wouldn't be counted in the other list?

I think they would count trucks as car but not bikes. The Wiki one says it includes bikes. As for commercial vehicles it was only a guess by me.

I think it may be due to population density and location of necessities.

Not suprised about Japan being low down. The public transport system is superb there and for some people its very difficult to own a car with no parking or garage space available.
