Just curious- if they seriously wanted to make it simple, wouldn't making it a coupe be "purest"? I understand they developed it from the beginning as a roadster so there's no unnecessary strengthening, but I tend not to like roadsters.
I guess using the traditional British roadster as a template is the only reason this is a roadster to begin with. I had hoped Honda was going to make the S2000 as a coupe. I know retrofits exist, but that's not the same as from the factory...
Well, early motorcars were open, so there's that. They also had no windscreen or doors... but I guess that's not really feasible for modern standards, especially in a volume car.
An MX-5 Coupé would be very appealing though. If they do it, I hope they don't make a super-expensive, super-sporty limited edition car. Just the same as the open top car, same engines, same setup, similar prices.

Visca Catalunya!
They say the next GT-86 will be MX-5 based, so look for that to be the coupe.
I for one love the idea of a roadster and don't see it as any less pure than a coupe. More part of the world while driving. S'good.

Welcome everyone to the new MX-5 Roadster Coupé. Except that it isn't called the Raodster Coupé anymore. It's now called the RF, which stands for Retractable Fastback.

I reckon it's a little bit too complex, convoluted and slightly overengineered but it's most probably the version I'd end up buying. I'd personally prefer a proper hardtop coupé, though.

Yeah, this is cool. Maybe Mazda will release a limited run coupe later on in production, but it isn't really necessary.
They got a year of good press after the launch, and they will get another several months outta this. Another standing triple from our Zoom Zoom friends in Hiroshima. What a roll they've been on.
