You have to remember that in the olden days men and animals were much much stronger than they are now. With civilization we've become comfortable and with comfortable we've become weak. In those days a war elephant charging at you was enough to make you realize you're in serious trouble. Whatever, buildings, arrows, trees, EVEN swords at times and basically most other things in the way were no problem for a WE. Their only major threat was the spearmen, because many would come at a time and start poking the spear deep into the flesh which would kill it. War elephants were used mainly by the Ancient Persian Civilization.

force them to...elementary tactics. otherwise counter with your own mounted troops, force them into close combat.
