The Peugeot 104 was launched in 1972, it was a small 4-door hatchback, with a 950 cc alloy OHC engine. As such it became a mainstay of the Peugeot programme, and the platform of this car was also used to provide Citroen with an opportunity to come up with a new small car in 1978 (the Visa).
In 1973 a shortened version of the 104 appeared, which lost two doors and a considerable amount of interior space. It was called the Z Coupe, and besides the 950 cc engine, a 1108 and a 1361 cc engine became available, whereby the most powerful version gave 80 BHP at the tap. This turned the Z into a real boy racer and the final ZS versions are well sought after. The hottest version was the ZS2 with 93 BHP, of which only 1000 were produced in 1979.
Many other versions appeared over the years with some cosmetic updates. Production stopped in 1988. Overall 1.6 mln 104s (all versions) were made.
The Z body shape was also used for the Citroen LN and the Talbot Samba.
