No. Honda, Toyota and Datsun kicked their ass much of the next 20 years.
On the other hand, consider the Detroit boats most Americans preferred. That worked out just fine.

I do wish the SVX had been better received. Probably the coolest thing Subaru ever offered until the WRX.
