Pick a battle , please compare similar cars ie. dont compare a focus to a corvette. and please leave other cars out. no skylines or supras.
state your reasons for choosing the winner.

    Ford Motor company:
Ford - Mainstream mass market/ sports/ off roaders (global)
    Lincoln - Slightly upmarket (US)
    Mercury - ? (US)
Land Rover - Off roaders (global)
    Jaguar - Prestige saloons (global)
Volvo - Slightly upmarket European brand (global)
Aston Martin - Sports cars (global)

    General Motors:
Cheverolet - Mass market/ sports/ off roaders (US)
Pontiac - mass market/ sports (US)
    Buick - Automotive blancmange (US)
Hummer - An off roader (US)
Holden - Mass market/ sports/ off roaders (Aus)
Cadillac - Prestige saloons (US, possibly Europe soon)
Opel - Mass market/ sports/ off roaders (Europe)
Vauxhall - Mass market/ sports/ off roaders (UK)
    Saab - Slightly upmarket (global)

I think Ford has the edge there, splitting the different vehicle categories between different companies. This means that the different companies can specialise.
GM has 3 different companies effectively producing the same cars (Opel, Vauxhall and Holden) and is very US orientated.
They should ditch the Cheverolet, and Vauxhall brands*, replacing them with 1 big global company that does all the mainstream mass market cars, that are currently sold by Chevy, Opel, Vauxhall and Holden, like Ford.
Opel could then be repositioned as the equivalent of Volvo, Saab could get knocked up a notch to compete with Jaguar, and Holden could have more of a sporting focus.

    So you'd have:
"GM" - mainstream mass market/ sports/ off roaders (global)
    Opel - Slightly upmarket (global)
    Saab - Prestige saloons (global)
    Holden - Sports (global)
    Pontiac - Sports (US)
    Cadillac - Prestige saloons (US)
    Hummer - Off roaders (global)

    Just a thought.

*Vauxhall is a pointless UK only badge, Cheverolet might be considered "too American" for the global market.

This business plan is Copyright of Coventrysucks 2004. If I see GM coming out with similar plans, I want a %age of the proceeds.
    Thanks for all the fish

That would totally screw up the Corvette symbol.

    Urgh, would be a disaster.

Trying to make a one-look fits all ends up with mediocre styling to fit all the different markets equally badly.

Compare the Opel and Vauxhall treatment of the VX220. The Vauxhall looks a million times better !!!!

and if you single brand who do you chose ?
GM has a bad reputation in Europe after the whole GM-Chrysler-Talbot debacle of the 70-80s

    Like Ford you mean.
It wouldn't have to be one range of cars for the whole world, they could still have "GM" US, "GM" Europe and "GM" Australia, with some different cars for different markets.

But the only difference with the VX220 is the nose.
It's the 'brand identity' which made the difference and the Vauxhall 'brand' just produces a sharper image for that car.

The manufacturers already have shared platform so they all are "GM" cars underneath ( except it seems the US still keeps one gen behind the rest, I've never understood the reasoning )

So how would the 'global GM' brand work ? and how would it bring benefit ??

there is more room in a silverado than a F150, but the ford looks better
as for the GT vs. Vette well Im undicided I love them both.
I Like the camarro better then the mustang
    Cadillac over Lincoln any day.
If you were to compare the H2 to the Range Rover. The Range Rover is a nicer car.

so I honsetly dont like the chevy/ford saga of argument, I like em both.

Well ive got a few Qs over this one coventry (because in all realisum yourplan bites)
What about the mainstream holdens? we need them for our roads they are built more for our conditions and limiting them to a sport only brand means we need to use something else which more then likly have adiquite ground clearence, cooling (we have to limit our areodynamics even for the sakeof cooling) and price and insurence and also public image....i dont imagine GM staying in this country for long if they try to flog off some of their large FWD V6 cars.....

And vauxhall also has an image in pommy land at least keep them with something their familar with....that why we had holden cars rebadged as Vauxhalls and chevrolets in south africa...so they can at least associate something to them.....

And other companys youare failing to mention are Mazda if you look on the ford website mazda is counted in the ford family....

And on GM well you missed Oldsmobile,Saturn,Dawoo,Suzuki and i think Subaru...

alright, you got me there, don ask how i came up with that one

i dont think organising GM under different brand ideas would work. sure it may make production of the cars from a development point of view, but as falc sai you'd stuggle to market them. I think GM likes the idea though of having brands of all different natures under their banner, so the likes of Bob Lutz would be against it
