    Goggomobil T250

    Goggomobil T250

The most successful microcar ever produced has to be the Goggomobil. Developed by Hans Glas and named after the pet name of his young nephew, which was goggi, it sold more than a quarter million during its 13 year production span from 1955 until 1968. It was even in production when BMW was already owner of the Glas company.

Propulsion was by a two stroke two cylinder engine, with 250, 300 and even 400 cc displacement, the latter meant for the American export markets. The 250 engine produced 13.5 BHP, 1.5 less than the 300, while the 400 had a whopping 20 BHP!. It could take four (small) people. Kerb weight was just over 400 kg, and top speed under favourable circumstances was over 100 kph.

The Goggomobil provided the financial basis for a the later 4 cylinder and even 8 cylinder cars that Hans Glas produced, but unfortunately the cash flow was not good enough to prevent the company from being taken over by BMW in November 1966.

Shown is a mint example at the Nuerburgring Old Timer GrandPrix in 2004.

Goggomobil was also popular in Australia. Rolling chassis & engines (330 & 400cc) were imported and clad in locally produced fibreglass bodies of similar style to the steel German originals. An 'E' was added to the Goggomobil brand name to more suit local taste and around 5000 Goggomobiles were sold, a good figure in our tiny market for an obscure microcar. For a few years my 6'2" father owned a cute dark green T300 sedan as a work commuter, after initially considering the considerably weirder Heinkel. I remember it well, including its strange sideways gearshift gate. Alas for the Goggo, major mechanical woes eventually sidelined the 'whirring wonder'

Best known Goggomobile here is the unique-to-Oz sports model, the Dart. Quaintly these Goggos are always referred to as THE Dart (rather than simply 'Dart') and the Dart's smooth lines were reputedly styled by an ex-Lotus designer whose name escapes me. Its body consists of only three pieces, an upper & lower shell, horizontally split, plus an opening engine cover. There were no doors so ingress meant that you 'left your dignity at the curb' upon entry. Headlights were faired in by clear covers a-la Jaguar E-Type. Despite only about 700 being built (and reputedly only 30-odd survivors today) the Dart is extremely well known downunder even by non-enthusiasts and definately rates as a #1 Cult machine

A selection from many pics of the Dart
