With stricter homologation requirements and less room for modifications, the Lister had much better chances. A third competition version, now simply dubbed the Storm GT, was prepared to race in the FIA GT Championship. Visually it was similar to the original racing Storm. Under the carbon fibre body panels the GT was very similar to the road car complete with the all-aluminium Jaguar V12.

The new GT class was basically a continuation of the old GT2 class so the existing cars had a big advantage early in the season. The year was dominated by the Oreca prepared Dodge Vipers but in the background the Lister Works team made big progress after a difficult first few races. In the second half of the season a second car was entered. At the Zolder 500 km Mike Hezemans and David Hart finished third and at Donnington the sister car driven by Julian Bailey, Andy Wallace and William Hewland finished second.

For 2000 a single Works car was readied to be driven by Julian Bailey and Jamie Campbell-Walter. They had a fantastic start to the season as the scored back to back victories. The two talented drivers added another three victories to the Storm's tally and at the end of the season clinched both the driver's and team's championship. In 2001 a further three wins were scored but the championship was won by the Larbre with their Vipers. The season also saw the introduction of the Prodrive built Ferrari 550 Maranellos; the first of a new generation of GT racing cars.

From 2002 onwards the old Storms and Vipers struggled to keep with the new Prodrive Ferraris but nevertheless the Lister managed to increase its tally of victories to 12, making it one of the most successful cars in the championship's history. The Storm GT was raced into the 2005 season by both the Works team and privateer teams like Creation Autosportif. A replacement was never developed as Lister turned to prototype racing with the Storm LMP, which never managed to score the successes achieved by the Storm GT.
