Fitted with just a single clutch, it is considerably lighter than a similar dual-clutch and still can shift gears in just 50ms when using the 'Corsa' mode. This is possible due to use of two independent shift rods; one to disengage and one to engage the gears. As on the Murciélago, the gearbox mounted ahead of the engine to accommodate for the all-wheel drive system, which uses a Haldex coupling to balance the power sent to the front and rear wheels.

A Formula 1 derived suspension setup is used with push-rod actuated springs and dampers at both ends of the car. Carbon fibre ceramic discs also come as standard equipment. Complying with all the more safety standards, the Aventador is equipped with sophisticated electronics to keep the car under control. Fortunately the level of 'intrusion' can be controlled with the 'Drive Select Mode System', which offers the driver the choice of 'Strada', 'Sport' and 'Corsa' modes. The mode changes effect virtually all vehicle characteristics.

The only element the Aventador really shares with the outgoing models is the overall design language, which makes the new machine instantly recognisable as a Lamborghini. The actual styling is a subtle development of the design used for the final version of the Murciélago, the limited edition Reventón and the Evoque show car. Like its predecessor, the Aventador uses active air intakes to balance the cooling and aerodynamics. Among the most striking features of the angular design are the low 'double bubble' roof and the sharp tail.

According to Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann the Aventador represents a jump of two generations in terms of technology and design. With its carbon fibre chassis, sophisticated suspension and remarkable light weight, he is certainly right about the former. We feel the design, on the other hand, jumped just the one generation but that was certainly enough to make the Aventador one of the best looking cars launched in 2011. Lamborghini's rivals will definitely have their work cut out to match the new machine's performance and looks.
