As he now had influence on the chassis configuration, he made sure the radiator was mounted at an angle. This allowed for the body to be considerably lower than at the front. The SS was fitted with a full width front windshields, so it could also be used on the road. The late arrival of the windshields substantially delayed the production of the first cars. Finally ready in 1958, the Chevrolet-engined Devin SS tipped the scales at under 1,000 kg.

Sold by exclusive distributor Art Evans, the Super Sport Devins were campaigned by privateer racers throughout North America with considerable success. They often upstaged much more exotic and more expensive machinery. In 1959, Pete Woods won the C-Modified Championship of the California SCCA club. The Devin SS was also tested by several period magazines, receiving universal praise. It is believed that a total of 15 complete examples were built using the Northern Irish chassis, while a further three cars were sold as kits. Devin also built several chassis in the United States.

During the production run, many details changed, so no two examples are alike. The price also rose from $5,950 to over $10,000. Production ceased at the end of 1959, by which time Bill Devin had focused his attention on the more affordable Devin C, which was powered by the Chevrolet Corvair flat six and the Volkswagen or Porsche engined Devin D. Of all of Devin's creations, the SS sports racers remains as the best known. It is believed that all but three of the original cars have survived and they are highly sought after today.
