Page 1 of 1 When the revised models of the 124 series went on sale in June 1993 a new model name was also introduced. The medium-sized range was now named the E-Class, like the S-Class and the C-Class and system of model designation was modified. First came a letter, denoting the class of car, followed by a three-digit number denoting the engine's cubic capacity. The suffixes 'E', 'T', 'C' disappeared. The two-door models were thus now the E 220 Coupe and the E 320 Coupe.
From September 1993 the E 36 AMG Coupe was on the market, a sporty version with the 272 hp 3.6-liter 4-valve engine from AMG. There were some minor changes to the bodywork of this version and it also had 17-inch light-alloy wheels in the AMG design. In March 1996 production of the E-Class coupes came to an end, nine years after their launch at the Geneva Motor Show. The successor was not to appear until summer 1997. Page 1 of 1
