With no M-version of the Z4 planned in the foreseable future, Alpina decided a performance version of their own. Modifications were carried through on all aspects of the car to transform the Z4 into the Roadster S.

The heart of the Roadster is formed by a 3.4 litre six cylinder engine, which is also used for various 3-series based models. Easily revving over 7000 rpm, the 'six' produces a hefty 300 bhp, almost 70 horses more than the most powerful engine found in the BMW Z4. Combined with a kerb-weight of just 1320 kg, the Roadster S has a power to weight ratio of 4.4 kg/bhp.

An optional hard-top is available, which, when fitted, increases the top-speed from 265 km/h to 270 km/h. At these speeds lift becomes a big problem, but a revised front and rear help to keep the Roadster S firmly on the ground. Other exterior changes include 19 inch wheels, which are very similar in design to those used on the limited-edition Alpina Roadster V8.

Custom-designed and hand-stitched leather bucket-seats make the Roadster S a pleasure to drive long distances in. More leather can be found throughout the cockpit on the steering wheel, door panels and dashboard. Alpina-blue is used for the dials, with a contrasting red being used for the pointers.

With the Roadster S, Alpina provides fans of the BMW Z4 with a little extra in every aspect.
