Click here to download printer friendly versionThe BMW Z8 is already a classic in its own right. A car with the finest ingredients built in very small numbers. A car simply adored by its current owners or owners to be, a car already looking forward to an almost eternal life. The Z8 and recycling? No, absolutely unthinkable! This is a car valuable today and valuable forever - simply because it transcends the restraints and confines of time.

It is however true that many enthusiasts missed a different transmission on the BMW Z8 available only with a manual gearbox. After all, there are people who wish to experience the thrill of this beautiful driving machine not only on a Sunday morning in wide, empty spaces, but also in the middle of town, in the rush hour, driving long distances and sometimes - alas - getting stuck in a traffic jam. This is the kind of situation where automatic transmission with that smooth, fast and simple Alpina Switch-Tronic gearshift on the steering wheel really makes life easier, allowing the driver to shift gears as he wishes or, if he prefers, not to shift gears himself at all.

Since an engine designed and built for high rpm interacts better with a six-speed manual gearbox than with automatic transmission, the five-speed automatic comes with exactly the right Alpina power unit offering a different, more discreet style of outstanding performance. And at the same time this engine is very fuel-efficient considering its power and performance.

Although the Alpina Roadster is naturally still a Z8 in the true sense of the word, Alpina have taken the freedom to slightly modify the character of the car. Despite its large 20-inch wheels, for example, setting the Alpina Roadster aside at very first sight from the original BMW model, the Alpina is somewhat softer and smoother on the road, not quite as harsh in its suspension, but nevertheless with excellent handling making every mile - especially on long distances - an experience of genuine pleasure in every respect. The steering is also a bit lighter and even smoother, perhaps benefitting the car's agility in providing an even better, more nimble response.

Inside, the Z8 has been given this aristocratic roadster further luxury of the highest standard. The seat squabs and centre backrests, together with the headrests, for example, are finished in slip-proof Alcantara particularly pleasant to feel and touch. As a highly exclusive option, the dashboard comes in blue velvet texture really qualifying as a genuine new experience in every respect, simply begging the driver to stroke the surface a bit before pressing the starter button At night the instruments glow in dark blue, giving the indicator needles in red daylight colour a wonderful contrast.

Featured is the 58th of 555 Roadster V8s produced. It is one of six cars delivered to Canada and one of just six livered in Alpina-blue worldwide. Included is a hardtop matching the car's exterior colour.
