Click here to download printer friendly versionThis is the Lotus 63, a 4 wheel driven F1 car for the 1969 season. Along with Matra and McLaren Lotus designed a 4 wheel drive car, Lotus had a head start because they had already built a 4 wheel drive single seater; the 56B Turbine car. The Cosworth DFV engine was placed reversed in the chassis, with the clutch behind the driver's seat and the gearbox on the left. The 63 was not a real succes, it finished 2 times from 9 starts. The Team Lotus drivers Hill and Rindt didn't like it, although when Rindt was persuaded to race it he finished second, the best result of the 63. John Miles drove it most, five times. The Matra and McLaren 4wd cars were also not a real succes. Four wheel drive cars were banned as from 1970.
