Whereas the original Carrera RS 2.7 of 1973 was built to homologate a new competition car, the new Carrera RS was effectively a road legal version of the one-make 911 Cup car.

Compared to the regular production 911 Carrera 2, the Carrera RS featured a more powerful, motorsport inspired version of the 3.6-litre flat six engine. The twin-spark, dry-sump unit featured was built with smaller tolerances and produced 9bhp more. More importantly, it was considerably lighter, particularly in the 'Basic' trim. The more luxurious and very rare 'Touring' featured complete interiors, sound deadening, air conditioning and power windows.

Porsche did not offer the 911 Carrera RS in the United States as the engine revisions did not meet the strict DOT regulations. Not to miss out on an opportunity to offer the RS model on the lucrative market, Porsche did eventually create the RS America in 1993 and 1994, which combined some of the lightweight options of the regular Carrera RS and a manual steering rack with the standard production engine of the 911 Carrera 2.

In spirit with its legendary predecessor, the Carrera RS did serve as the basis for a competition car. Dubbed the N/GT or Sport, it was still road legal but did feature a further stripped down interior and a roll-over bar. To homologate a more serious racing car, Porsche created the appropriately named 3.8-litre engined Carrera RS 3.8. In addition to the more powerful engine, the mighty homologation special for the Carrera RSR 3.8 also featured a wide bodykit and massive rear wing.

With 1,910 examples built the 'Basic' 911 Carrera RS was the most common form but it is nevertheless already highly sought after. The ultra-rare Carrera RS 3.8 is the most valuable of all and when one of the 55 examples come to market, they now demand seven figure prices.
