Page 1 of 1 In response to new LMP2 regulations introduced for the 2017 season, Oreca evolved their successful 05 design into the 07. The most important changes were the limitation of just four chassis manufacturers, which included Oreca, and a single engine manufacturer; Gibson Technology. The 2017 regulations also stipulated that the new chassis had to be built to LMP1 safety standards. As the 05 already met most requirements, Oreca could make do with an evolution of the existing design instead of a clean sheet.
Like all modern prototype racers, the 07 was built around a carbon-fibre composite monocoque with double wishbone suspension on both ends. The in-board dampers and springs were actuated through push-rods and carbon-fibre composite brakes were fitted on all four corners. The spec Gibson engine was mated to an XTrac six-speed sequential gearbox. The carbon-fibre body, developed once again by David Floury, was also a clear evolution of the existing design.
Raced on both sides of the Atlantic from the start of 2017, the Oreca 07 was particularly successful in the FIA World Endurance Championship. The car won its class in all but one of the nine rounds and that one other race was won by the Alpine A470, which was simply an 07 by another name. Such was the dominance that the other chassis manufacturers were allowed more leeway than originally stipulated to improve their cars over the winter ahead of the 2018 season.
For 2018, the Oreca 07 chassis was also used for the Acura AXR-05 DPi car. For this purpose the 07 underpinnings were clothed in a bespoke body and powered by an twin-turbo V6 engine. Page 1 of 1
