The Dutchman did face the strongest opposition in years and the team slipped to second in Constructors' Championship. It was also a year of internal turmoil with several key crew members, including designer Adrian Newey, leaving. There were also continuous questions over the future of second driver Sergio Perez.

Amidst the relative chaos, the team developed the RB21 for the 2025 season. As this was the final year for the current rule-set, the car was very much an evolution of the design that bagged Verstappen his fourth World Championship. During pre-season, it looked very similar to the final iteration of the RB20. Most of the development work focused on the shapes of the nose and front wing, and the engine cover and cooling architecture.

With Perez and Red Bull Racing going their separate ways at the end of 2024, the team needed a new driver for 2025. It was decided to promote Liam Lawson after just a handful of races in 2024 from the Racing Bulls junior team.
