Chassis:
Completed late in 1923, this Locomobile Model 48 Sportif was picked up at the Connecticut factory by its first owner. He intended to bring the car back to his Tacoma, Washington home under its own power. Trouble was that he could not yet drive, so a chauffeur was hired to help complete the trip. This proved particularly eventful and by the time the pair reached Washington state, the new owner could drive the car himself. He would later acquire two more Locomobiles and held onto this car until 1933.
The Locomobile's second owner used Model 48 Sportif as the family car for another 15 years. In 1948 it was garaged and when the owner passed away in 1970, the car was given to his grandson. The Locomobile, however, did not move until it was acquired by Wayne Herstad in 2005. He had actually seen the car back in 1970 when he was still a college student and he had more recently tried to find the Model 48 again. In remarkably original condition it was entered in the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where it placed second in the Preservation class.
