Chassis:
This is the first of two 85G chassis acquired by Conte Racing for the 1985 IMSA GTP Championship. The pair were fitted with the stock-block Buick turbo V6, developed by McLaren Engines. Also intended for use at Indy, the 3.4 litre engine was very powerful, producing in excess of 650 bhp. In only its second race, chassis 85G/1 topped qualifying for the Daytona 24 Hours. Unfortunately, the package was unreliable as it was quick and the car did not reach the finish once in 1985. The next season showed some improvements with a couple of third place finishes and the pole position at the Sebring 12 Hours.
Following its contemporary racing career the Daytona and Sebring pole sitter was placed in longterm storage. It was eventually acquired by Ray Langstorm, who had it completely restored to full running order to campaign it in historic events. One of its first outings was at the 2010 Monterey Motorsports Reunion and it returned to the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca two years later.
