Chassis:
The Lusso's combination of luxury and racing pedigree grabbed the attention of Steve McQueen and in 1963 the actor / racer put down the deposit for a brand new example. He specified a somewhat unusual metallic brown colour officially known as 'Marrone Metallizzato', but other than that the Lusso was completely stock. 'The king of cool' took delivery of his Ferrari in the summer of 1963. In the next few years he spent many hours behind the wheel of the 250 GT both on the glorious California roads and on the track. He eventually led go of his beloved Lusso in 1967 when he traded up for a Ferrari 275 Nart Spyder in 1967.
Quite in contrast with its very active life in McQueen's hands, the metallic brown Lusso was stored for 24 years between 1973 and 1997. It was retrieved from hiding and completely restored by Michael Regalia, a former president of the Nethercutt Collection. He restored the car from the ground up and has since won awards at almost every concours the car was shown including the Cavallino Classic and Amelia Island. After a ten year ownership Regalia consigned the car to Christie's 2007 Exceptional Motor Cars at the Monterey Jet Center Auction. It sold for a staggering $2.3 million, which was around four times the esimate.
