It is believed that this M1A was sold new to American privateer racer Joe Starkey. Fitted with an Oldsmobile engine, he raced the car with considerable success in regional SCCA events in 1965 and 1966. The contemporary racing career of this car probably ended early in 1967. In more recent years, it was acquired by a British historic racer with a particular interest in early McLaren sports racers. He had chassis 20-15 completely restored and fitted with a more competitive Chevrolet small-block engine. In 2013, it was invited for the Goodwood Festival of Speed where McLaren's 50th anniversary was celebrated.
