One of a pair of McLaren M2Bs used during the 1966 season, this is the car debuted at Monaco, in what was the team's very first Grand Prix. Immediately after failing due to an oil leak, the Ford V8 engine fitted was replaced by the Serenissima unit. In this guise, the car was entered in three more Grands Prix. It managed to make it to the start only in the British Grand Prix where it finished sixth, scoring McLaren's very first points. For the final races of the year, McLaren switched to the sister car. Two years later M2B-2 re-appeared in the hands of Trevor Taylor and fitted with a Climx FPE V8. Although entered in the 1968 International Trophy, it did not start. It suffered a similar fate a year later in a F5000 race at Brands Hatch for which it was fitted with an Oldsmobile V8. The first McLaren Formula 1 car eventually ended up in the Donnington Collection in dire condition. During the 2000s, it was completely restored by Hall & Hall and fitted with a Ford V8 engine as used during its Monaco debut.
