Chassis:
One of a pair of Lotus 49Bs built for the 1969 Tasman Series, this chassis was assigned to Graham Hill. He failed to score a victory 'Down Under' but did manage to to finish on the podium twice. Back in Europe, it was rebuilt to Formula 1 specification and briefly raced by Hill, Richard Attwood and Jo Bonnier but with little success. Towards the end of 1969, it was sold to South African Dave Charlton, who extensively campaigned chassis R8 on his continent, scoring numerous victories. Subsequently raced by Piet de Klerk, it was retired at the end of the 1972 season. In damaged condition it was later acquired by the late Australian collector John Dawson-Damer. He had the Lotus 49 meticulously restored to its works configuration. In 2014, chassis R8 was acquired at auction by noted Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey. He had the car restored to full running order and campaigned it at the 2016 and 2018 Monaco Historic Grands Prix. In 2017, it was also demonstrated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as part of the Type 49's 50th anniversary celebration.
