Chassis:
The first of five Long Nose D-Types built for the 1955 season, chassis XKD 504 served at Le Mans as Jaguar's spare car. Later in the year it was raced at Silverstone and the Nürburgring but with little success by the works team. In 1956, it was used to test a fuel injection system before being sold to Ecurie Ecosse in 1957. Following a season sporting the Scottish squad's striking colours, it was sold on to Mike Salmon and later Peter Sutcliffe, who continued to race the car until a heavy accident at Snetterton in 1963 ended its contemporary racing career.
Sutcliffe returned the car to Jaguar where it was repaired using the front subframe from the Le Mans winning sister car, XKD 505. The repaired car was sold to historic racer Neil Corner, who in turn passed it on to another noted collector Paul Vestey. He replaced the XKD 505 subframe, which was required to restore that car, with a new subframe. In 1994 Vestey managed to acquire the original subframe from Sutcliffe and was thus able to restore XKD 504 to its former glory. He eventually sold it and it passed through the hands of Dr Lou Sellyei and John McCaw before being acquired by Scottish historic racer Irvine Laidlaw. From his collection, it will be offered by RM Auctions in September 2013.
