Chassis:
This is one of the earliest Type 59s, which was internally referred to as 'Voiture Moteur No 3.' It served the Works team from late 1933 until Bugatti ended their Grand Prix program. Among its original drivers were René Dreyfus and Robert Benoist. In the spring of 1935 it was sold to English privateer racer C.E.C. Martin. It was subsequently raced by its successive owners until 1949 when it was crashed fatally by Kenneth Bear. Bear's widow sold the car to his chief mechanic, who held on to the car until 2005. In those 56 years the car was only sparingly used and shown. By 2005, it was no longer in running order but nevertheless fetched a hefty £1,321,500 at Bonhams' Goodwood Festival of Speed auction. It was acquired by collector and historic racers Thomas Bscher, who at the time was president of Bugatti Automobiles. Since his acquisition, the rare Type 59 has been completely restored and returned to Goodwood for the Festival of Speed in 2013.
