Chassis:
Originally built with a streamliner body, this W196 was later converted to the more conventional open-wheel configuration. In its original guise, it was used by Juan Manuel Fangio to score the W196's debut victory at Reims. Fangio used it again at Silverstone before switching to a new open-wheel W196. Chassis 000 03 was subsequently campaigned in select Grands Prix in 1954 and 1955 by Karl Kling and Andre Simon but with limited success. Following its contemporary racing career, this W196 was retained by Mercedes-Benz, who have loaned it for many years to the National Automobile Museum in Turin (former Biscaretti Collection).
