Chassis:
Originally fitted with the conventional flat-12 engine, chassis 027 was only used for testing in 1969 and 1970 but never raced. In 1971, it was modified to accept the newly developed flat-16 engine. Among the changes were a longer wheelbase and a lengthened body. During August of that year, it was tested at Weissach to explore the potential of the sixteen-cylinder engine. Soon after, Porsche opted to use a turbocharged version of the flat-12 instead. The only sixteen-cylinder engined Porsche has since been retired to the Porsche Museum and is only rarely seen in public.
