Chassis:
The very first MP4/1 produced, this chassis debuted during the practice of the season opener at Long Beach but John Watson opted to race his back-up M29 instead. It finally lined up for its first at round three in Argentina where Watson qualified seventh only to retire with a gearbox failure. For the remainder of the year, chassis MP4/1-1 was driven by Andrea de Cesaris with a seventh in the Italian Grand Prix as the best result. Following its retirement from active duty, it was retained by McLaren. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the revolutionary MP4/1, it was restored to full running order. It was demonstrated during the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed by Lewis Hamilton and Chris Goodwin.
