Chassis:
This is the third of four new BMW V12 LMRs built in 1999. It was first used in the Prequalifying session ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Pierluigi Martini and Yannick Dalmas clocked the 24th fastest time. For the race they were joined by Joachim Winkelhock. Starting from sixth, the three experienced pilots won the race. With two cars destroyed in accidents at Sebring and Le Mans, the winning car could not be retired and was used for another season and a half. The best it could do was a series of podium finishes. Today the Le Mans winner has been fully restored to its victorious guise. Celebrating the tenth anniversary of BMW's Le Mans win, chassis 003/99 was out at the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the hands of BMW stalwart Steve Soper. The highly successful machine has since been a regular at Goodwood and other events.
