Chassis:
The first of a pair of brand new Tipo 3 chassis built for the 1958 season, it is believed that this was the car used by the factory at the Belgian, German and French Grands Prix before it was sold to Temple Buell. Repainted blue, it was then raced by Shelby and Gregory with limited success. In 1960, the Piccolo was fielded by Scuderia Centro Sud for Giorgio Scarlatti with a fourth in a minor Argentinean event as the best result. Sold back to the United States, it saw its final contemporary outings in a wide array of colours with Bob Drake and Don Hulette behind the wheel. It was then placed in storage until it was acquired by American historic racer Don Orosco in 1984. He had it completely restored by Crosthwaite & Gardiner and raced it at select events in the second half of the 1980s. It then passed through various hands including those of noted collectors Ralph Lauren and Thomas Bscher. Today, it is part of a prominent German Maserati collection and campaigned all over Europe.
