Chassis:
With the new M26 still not ready to race, McLaren built up two additional M23s at the start of the 1977 season. This is the second of these, which was raced exclusively by Jochen Mass. He finished fourth twice, while his best result was a second place in the Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp. The car was last raced in the July 3rd French Grand Prix, which marked the final race start for a works McLaren M23, well over four years after its 1973 debut. Sold to the United States, it was later campaigned in classic events by Monterey Historics founder Steve Earle. Chassis M23-12 is today owned by a fellow American, who also actively races the car.
