Chassis:
Chassis 3053 was the third of three examples sold to Briggs S. Cunningham. This 300S was destined for the big and burly Bill Spear, who immediately placed the new Maserati third overall at Sebring together with Sherwood Johnston. Spear continued to race the car in select events during the 1955 season, with a second overall and first in class at Watkins Glen as one of the absolute highlights. In 1956, chassis 3053 was acquired by Joe Guibardo, who continued to race the car well into the 1960s. It was then added to the impressive stable of flight engineer turned race car preparer William M. Wonder. In 1986, German historic racer and collector Thomas Bscher bought the very original Maserati and raced it for nearly two decades. The next owner was Tony Smith, who continued its racing career. The current owner acquired 3053 at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed auction for just over GBP 4 million, making it the most expensive Maserati ever sold at auction.
