Chassis:
Completed in April of 1957, this 300S was one of the works cars that served as a back-up for the main factory effort with the V8-engined 450S. Giorgio Scarlatti raced the car at the 1957 Mille Miglia, where he finished fourth overall, despite racing solo. Sharing with Jo Bonnier and Hans Herrmann, Scarlatti then finished 15th overall at the Nürburgring. In the hands of Bonnier, it was later in the year part of the disastrous Venezuelan Grand Prix episode. The Swede retired after hitting the Maserati 450S of Harry Schell. The race cost Maserati the title and ultimately prompted the Italian manufacturer to withdraw from racing. Chassis 3072 was nevertheless repaired at the factory and sold to Brazil. In 1972, it was found by Colin Crabbe and brought back to the United Kingdom where it was completely restored. Among its subsequent owners were Kerry Manolas, Anthony Pilkington and Wolfgang Zweifler. The most recent, American owner bought the car from Hugh Taylor in 2004.
