Chassis:
Chassis CS052 was probably the second 8V engined Siata built. It was one of just six 208s clothed by Stabilimenti Farina before they went bankrupt in 1953. These six were slightly lower than the later Balbo bodied cars thanks to pinched chassis rails that allowed the seat to be fitted lower in the chassis. The striking Siata was one of the stars of the 1952 Turin Auto Show. It nevertheless had to be pulled from the stand before the final day to get it prepared for the Mille Miglia. Here the car entered with start number 542 and raced by Tullini and Rossi to an early retirement. A sister car finished 11th overall, showcasing the new Siata's abilities.
After the Mille Miglia, chassis CS052 was returned to the Siata factory and some minor improvements were carried through. It was subsequently sold to an Italian enthusiast, who campaigned the car for many more years. In the early 1960s the Stabilimenti Farina Berlinetta was sold to the United States where eventually ended up in the fabulous collection of Siata expert Jarl de Boer. In 2002 a Dutch collector bought the car and many spares from De Boer and had it completely restored.
Now fully restored to the highest standards, the very important Siata will be offered during Bonhams' Quail Auction on August 14, 2009. The pre-sale estimate is a staggering $1,600,000 - $1,900,000.
