Chassis:
One of the first Type 51s produced, this example was delivered new to Polish aristocrat Count Stanislas Czaykowski through Bugatti's agent in Nice. The talented works-supported amateur racer scored a debut victory in the Casablanca Grand Prix. He would go on to race the Type 51 in both 2- and 2.3-litre trim with considerable success. After Czaykowski's untimely death due to a heavy accident at Monza in 1933 behind the wheel of a Type 54 Bugatti, chassis 51126 was returned to the factory.
The Type 51 was then sold to British amateur racer Aubrey Esson-Scott, who campaigned the car for several seasons with limited success. During this period, it was fitted with a 1.5-litre engine and a single seater body. In this guise, it continued to be raced by a succession of British owners before it was eventually moved to the United States when the latest owner emigrated to the United States. It was then acquired by the current owner in 1961, who raced it at several historic events before putting the car in storage. Following a complete restoration by Crosthwaite and Gardiner, it finally re-appeared in 2014.
