One of the first Porsche works 908/02 Spyders, this car debuted at Sebring in the hands of Jo Siffert and Brian Redman. They retired because of a crack in the chassis. The car then served as a spare in the subsequent rounds before being sold to Hans-Dieter Dechent. He raced the car at the Osterreichring together with Gerhard Koch. With the backing of Martini & Rossi, Dechent continued to campaign the car during the 1970 season. The car placed ninth at the Nürburgring and sixth at Spa. For Le Mans, chassis 005 was equipped with a Long Tail body. Driven by Helmut Marko and Rudi Lins, it placed third overall behind two 917s and first in class. The car continued to be campaigned well into the 1971 season and was also used in the movie Le Mans. Among its subsequent owners were noted collectors Ernst Schuster and Julio Palmaz. Restored to its 1970 Le Mans class-winning livery, it has now been consigned to Bonhams November 30th Bond Street sale. The pre-sale estimate is a hefty GBP 2 - 3 million.
