The very first M29 built, this is the car used by John Watson at the type's promising 1979 British Grand Prix debut. He finished fourth and a fortnight later, he also finished fifth in the German Grand Prix. Watson raced the car just once more in 1979, finishing ninth at the Osterreichring. Early in the 1980 season, it was campaigned four times by Alain Prost with a sixth in Argentina and a fifth in Brazil as the best result. Not raced again, chassis M29-1 eventually ended up in Italian hands. During the early 2000s, it was raced in historic events.
