Chassis:
Quite possibly the oldest surviving 35 hp Mercedes, this example was sold to Australia through Du Cros, who was the London-based distributor for the British colonies. In 1914, it was acquired by the Isis Downs sheep station for the use of property manager Richard Taylor. It was not uncommon for luxury cars like a Mercedes or Rolls-Royce to be used on tough assignments like this as any lesser machine was simply not up to the task. It was used hard, and required a complete rebuild in 1917. During the 1930s, it was used on another sheep farm by a William Shannon. His family owned the rare Mercedes well into the 1980s. With the help of Peter Shannon, from whom he had bought the car, the 35 hp was completely restored by new owner Ray White over a period of many years. In 2010, White sold the car to the current owner, who has consigned it to the November 29 Bonhams Bond Street Sale.
