Chassis:
The works prototype, this Birdcage was originally fitted with a two-litre engine and tested by Stirling Moss. It was first raced at Rouen in July of 1959, where Moss immediately grabbed the victory. Later in the year, it was also driven to victory in an Italian hill-climb by Odoardo Govoni. The car was then converted to Tipo 61 specification and sold to Lloyd Casner's Camoradi team. It was raced with limited success by Carroll Shelby and Dan Gurney mainly due to mechanical failures. In May of 1960, Nino Vaccarella and Umberto Magioli crashed out of the Targa Florio, while leading. Returned to the factory, the car was fitted with a streamlined body for Le Mans. Here it was raced for Camoradi by Chuck Daigh and Masten Gregory until an electric failure put them out of the race. Sold on soon after, it was raced with some success in SCCA events for several more years. During the 1970s, it passed through several British hands before it was acquired by Peter Kaus in 1977 and later displayed in his Rosso Bianco museum. It was carefully restored for Kaus by Stephen Griswold, who also raced it at several occasions in the 1980s. In 2000, it was bought by German collector and historic racer Hartmut Ibing. It has since changed hands again and has been regularly raced in historic events.
