Chassis:
This Type 57 was delivered as a rolling chassis in March of 1938 to Albert d'Ieteren, who was one of two official Bugatti agents in Belgium and also a custom coach builder. Especially for the Bagage family, the Type 57 chassis was fitted with a Cabriolet body that included a unique 2+1 seating configuration where the rear passenger sat transversely. After the War, the car resurfaced in Paris and in 1952, it was acquired by famous French Fauvist painter André Derain. Later in the decade, chassis 57589 made its way across the Atlantic and between 1963 and 1998, it was owned by a Robert M. Wells from Akron, Ohio. It was then bought by fellow American collector Chris Gardner, who had the car completely restored. It has since then been repainted once, and the interior has been re-upholstered with ostrich skin.
