Chassis:
The original C-3 prototype, this car was based on a modified C-2 frame. It was fitted at the Cunningham factory with a Coupe body derived from the C-2 competition cars. The construction of the coachwork proved so complicated and expensive that Cunningham outsourced the job for the production cars to Italian experts Vignale. The unique 'Competition Coupe' was acquired new by Carl Kiekhaefer of Mercury Marine. He traded the car back for a later Vignale bodied C-3 Coupe. To avoid paying taxes again, Kiekhaefer had his new car given the 5206 chassis number of the Competition Coupe. To avoid problems in the future, the one-off Coupe was re-tagged 5206X. Subtly modified, it was sold again by the factory. Since then, it has changed hands only twice and was acquired by the current owner in 1999. At that time, it was painted white with blue stripes, just like the competition Cunninghams. Since then, it has been restored and re-finished in its original exterior and interior colours.
