Chassis:
Originally conceived as a 500 TR, powered by the two-litre engine, this Scaglietti bodied machine was delivered new to American Ed Lunken through Luigi Chinetti in May of 1956. He raced the car with considerable success in the American Midwest. In September, the car was fitted with a Chinetti-supplied 2.5 litre engine, which effectively upgraded the car to 625 LM specification. It was the only Scaglietti-bodied car to be fitted with the larger engine. In this guise, it continued to be raced by Lunken and a succession of drivers, including Augie Pabst, well into the 1960s. In the years after its lengthy contemporary racing career, it spent some time in Great Britain before it was acquired by Mexican historic racer Nicolas Zapata during the second half of the 1990s. He campaigned the car until he succumbed to a fatal accident while racing a Porsche 356 in the 2010 Carrera Panamericana retrospective. Zapata is pictured in action during the 2010 Le Mans Classic and Goodwood Revival, just a few months before his untimely death.
