Chassis:
After Richie Ginther was forced to compete in the first two Grands Prix with a V8-engined P57, he finally made his first start with the P578 using this chassis at the Belgian Grand Prix. His best result of the year was a third at the French Grand Prix. Ginther would continue to use this car throughout the 1963 season, and while he finished second on three occasions, a victory eluded him. Sold on to Mimmo Dei's Scuderia Centro Sud, it was raced by Giancarlo Baghetti in 1964 and Masten Gregory in 1965 but with limited success.
Following its contemporary racing career, it was acquired by Swiss collector Walter Grell. From his estate, it was acquired in 2000 by Scottish historic racer Irvine Laidlaw. It was restored to full running order and fitted with the famous 'stack-pipe' exhausts, even though this car had never sported them in period. After Laidlaw raced the car at a couple of events in 2002, it has more recently joined the stable of an Italian historic racer.
