Chassis:
One of an estimated 25 500 Ks fitted by the factory with the range-topping Spezial Roadster bodywork, this example was ordered new by a Mr W. L. Quartermaine after he had seen an earlier example at the 1935 Earls Court Motor Show. An insurance broker by trade, Quartermaine sold the car in 1938 when he acquired a V12 Lagonda. After it passed through several hands, it was acquired by Arthur Dawson in the mid 1950s. He first used the car extensively but then stored the Spezial Roadster in a garage behind his butcher's shop for over 30 decades, which earned it the nickname 'the butcher's car'. It was eventually retrieved from hiding in 1988 and sold at auction to a German enthusiast, who had the well worn car comprehensively restored by Wagner and Landschut. Following a spell in Japan, it was part of the prominent collection of Chip Connor. In more recent years, it was acquired by the Louwman Museum and proudly displayed in the purpose-built museum in The Hague, The Netherlands. It is also regularly shown at events around the world, and in 2015, was awarded 'Best of Show' at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance just north of Paris. That was exactly 20 years after it had also won Best of Show at the Louis Vuitton Classic held at Bagatelle in Paris.
