Chassis:
This high-door, long-tail version of the 540 K Spezial Roadster was acquired by British enthusiast Sir John Chubb. He enjoyed driving the car himself but for obvious reasons hid it carefully during the War. In the early 1950s, it was sold on and refurbished by Mercedes-Benz before it joined the pioneering collection of American designer Brook Stevens in 1956. He displayed the car in his museum for three decades, and at one point it was converted from right- to left-hand drive. It was then owned by a succession of American custodians before it was acquired by F1 mogul Bernie Ecclestone in 1995. He managed to re-register the car with the original plates of DYX 911. From Ecclestone's collection, it was offered at auction in 2007 and sold for close to £4 million.
