Chassis:
A works car, this 962C was first raced at Le Mans in 1985 with Al Holbert, John Watson and Vern Schuppan at the wheel. Running as high as second, chassis 962-004 was forced to retire with an engine issue during the last three hours. Wearing a sprint body, it was raced by Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx for three more 1985 World Championship races. A second place finish at Mosport was the best result. It served for another year as a works car with Bob Wollek and Mass sharing the driving duties. The best placing in 1986 was a sixth at Monza. While it started from pole position, it retired from Le Mans once more. Its works career ended with an accident at the Nürburgring.
Fully rebuilt, it joined the Joest Racing stable ahead of the 1987 season and continued to be used by a variety of drivers and wearing colourful liveries. No win was scored but Derek Bell and Hans-Joachim Stuck did finish second at the Nürburgring. Campaigned through to the end of 1988, it was subsequently acquired by an American collector. He had the car restored to its original Rothmans guise with a sprint bodywork. In 2015, chassis 962-004 made a rare public appearance, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Now wearing the long-tail Le Mans style body and 1986 livery, it was consigned to the very exclusive 2023 RM Sotheby’s Le Mans centenary sale.
