Chassis:
This unique 540 K combined the design of the Cabriolet A with features used for the Spezial Roadster like the V-shaped windshield. This Spezial Cabriolet A style was also fitted to one 500 K chassis. Completed in April of 1939, this one-off 540 K was delivered new to an enthusiast in Paris. Shortly after the War, the car was acquired by famous American tenor James Melton, who was referred to as the 'The Tenor of Times'. He retained the car for the rest of his life and it was among one of the last to leave his collection shortly before his death in 1961. During the early 1970s, it was acquired by legendary collector Otis Chandler. He had it restored by Richard Martin. The car was ready in time for the 1973 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where it won the coveted 'Best of Show' award. Among the unique 540 K's subsequent owners were the likes of Axel Wars and General William Lyon. It was restored once more during the 1990s, when it was in the ownership of Mike Fennel. This time round, it was finished with the bright red exterior and tan leather interior it still boasts today. The current custodian acquired the car shortly after and it has rarely been seen during the last two decades.
