Chassis:
Finished in gold with a deerskin interior, and shown at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show, this is the first of three Frua bodied 5000 GTs. It was entrusted to French Maserati distributor Jonny Simone, who drove the car from Modena to Le Mans, where he fielded a V8 Maserati that year. It was then shown at the Paris Motor Show and offered for 15 million Francs, which made it the most expensive car in the world. Simone found now takers and the Maserati was returned to the factory in the fall of 1963. Here it was rebuilt and re-painted and offered as a new car with the chassis number changed from 103.048 to 103.064. The car was then sold to an enthusiast from Rome, who owned the car until January of 1966 when he traded it back in for a new Maserati. It was refurbished once more and repainted a ruby red metallic before it was sold to a Saudi Prince living in exile in Egypt. The car was soon after impounded by the government and was sold on to Germany. It was not seen again until it was offered at auction in Monaco in 2000. Here it was acquired by noted Maserati collector John Bookout, who commissioned a complete restoration. He had the car finished in gold just like it was when first shown in Geneva back in 1962. The subsequent owner, who bought the car in 2013, had it re-painted in the ruby red it was finished in for most of its life.
