Chassis:
Built ahead of the 1986 season, this 635 CSI was fielded by the works supported Schnitzer Motorsport team during the 1986 season. It was raced by the likes of Dieter Quester, Emanuele Pirro, Gerhard Berger, Otto Rensing and Roberto Ravaglia. According to the Schnitzer archive, it debuted with Ravaglia and Pirro at Monza but unfortunately lost a wheel during the race. It then scored podium finishes at Donington, Hockenheim and Zeltweg before it was entered in the Spa 24 Hours for Quester, who shared driving duties with Altrid Heger and local hero Thierry Tassin. Starting 9th on the grid, the trio fought their way up the order to score an emphatic outright victory.
Following its European Touring Car Championship duties, it was shipped Down Under for the James Hardie 1000 at Bathurst. Under the Goold Motorsport, it had originally been entered for Formula 1 stars Gerhard Berger and Riccardo Patrese. They did not arrive and instead, the Spa 24 Hours winning car was shared by Quester and Ravaglia. The latter qualified the car 9th in the qualifying shoot-out. Sadly, the Austrian / Italian pairing was forced to retire 19 laps into the 163-lap race.
At the end of the year, it was acquired by Yvan Tapy and raced for two seasons in the French touring car championship. In 1988, Tapy sold chassis RA2-79 to his compatriot Paul Rivault. He would go on to own it through to 2015, when it was acquired by a French enthusiast. It was subsequently restored and returned to its iconic Original Teile works livery with the help of BMW Classic. From 2016, it has been regularly raced by successive owners.
